Practice with a purpose
In order for you to get the most from your time on the putting green, I would recommend setting out drills/targets & objectives for you to achieve in order to make practice more enjoyable as well as measuring your progress. David Pelz has devised a series of putting drills to test how good you on the different putting disciplines.
To do the drills all you need is
- 5/10 balls
- One bag of tees
Simply set out the drills shown below, and using the point system shown on each picture find out what handicap the points you gets relates to. If your score is less than you expected or you want to improve then book in for a putting session and we can work on the areas that you need to improve.
Once you have done your 1st tests keep a note of your score/handicap and see if you have improved the next time that you do the test.
What did I score
I have recently done the test and it was quite interesting, and it has highlighted what part of my putting I need to work on.
- 3 footer – 10 (+2HCap)
- Makeable – 11 (+1HCap)
- Mid-Range – 10 (9HCap)
- Lag – 9 (9HCap)
As you can see from the results my longer putts are not as good as I would like, and I will be trying to improve these in my practice sessions. I am also going to work on my makeable putts. My handicap was good +1, however I need to be achieving a +5 handicap (13 points) for me to convert more birdie chances.
